MTV Cafe

MTV Rationale :

MTV is a current music brand which has rocked television from the day they ‘killed the radio star’ with music video recordings.

The brief is to re-design MTV’s social space/cafe area in the London studios based in Camden Town - Hawley Crescent. The current social space is simple with minimal seating and little graphic design, I hope to make it more inviting and comfortable for visitors, functions and Meetings with potential clients.

I have researched the history of MTV and how it has developed from the 1970’s.
Not only is this company extremely successful, consumers have very high expectations for this ever growing music phenomenon, therefore I intend to exaggerate its greatness through my design in their social space.

My target audience is young music artists and the staff of MTV studios.
This design will reflect the trend of new artists as well as using nostalgic themes to enhance the ‘retro’ themes of Camden town.
Primary sources demonstrated to me that the studios are undergoing reconstruction of the exterior build.
After Looking at the plans of the new theme, and colour schemes I have decided to use elements within my design to relate the tone and stance of the MTV building.

Concept:
Theme-
MTV was the first American cable channel to produce music videos.
I intend to create a design which is reflective on music as a whole, from where it originated and where it is today modernised.
My aim is to captivate the audience and draw them into this space for coffees, meetings and general functions.
The theme of my design is nostalgic and current in order to welcome local artists and visitors as well as possibly well known music idols and MTV associates.
Structure-
The main feature of this space will be a structured aluminium recored arm- influenced by the Thorens 160 model, it will be self supportive and elevated 3 meters along the wall with the Bar and 3 anechoic chambers underneath for separate seating areas.

The anechoic chambers will be a cylinder shape in coherence with the circular tubes of the aluminium arm, I have decided to use this style of booth as they will be a great way to divert excess noise from the space so that meetings can be as private as possible without having to use doors and create different rooms.
These cylinders will be in the colours or Red,Orange and Yellow to compliment the new structure of MTV’s Studio construction “in progress”
by Morgan Sindall.
Anechoic chambers are used frequently in recording studios to captivate sound easily, not only does it have an interesting texture and feel, it is music related and if used in the right way will be aesthetically pleasing to the consumer.

Pecha Kucha -Targets 2012

This Pecha Kucha Project is focused on the main aims I hope to achieve this year.
In my second year of the FDA graphic and spatial communications course I intend to focus on creating 3d visuals using Vectorworks and other various software which will enable me to communicate my spatial designs more effectively. Over the summer I have spent some time looking at various images which are computer generated, and also communicate an artistic characteristic.

I Would love to develop a more hands on approach to my 3D designs, with the use of model making, I hope to experiment with different materials and work with scales and accurate measurments to produce models which will give me a more 'real' idea of how my intended space will look and what would need to be altered accordingly.
My work experience with Kate Malone enabled me to develop my logo and branding design skills which I would like to pursue further.

Working with ceramics has really opened up areas of model making I have never experimented with before, I really enjoyed working with glaze combinations to enhance my knowledge on the science behind the art.
The collaboration of chemicals and oxides needed to create such amazing colourful outcomes is really complex and needs to be tested regularly for research into new colours alongside durability and health and safety.
This demonstrated to me there are so many different ways to create colours and technologies other than just using the standardised RGB & CMYK.

I travelled to Melbourne-Australia in March 2012 and found my self inspired by the incredible city.
The structures are all so modernised and to such a large scale compared to London which still has its 'old town' characteristics.

Tiles Wine Bar and Restaurant based in Victoria was due to have a refurbishment, I was asked to help plan and decorate the new style of the restaurant in hope to attract more customers over the christmas period.
This project was based on deciding which colour to paint it and how the layout swell as the furniture could be altered to draw in more consumers.
This project was fun as I had never been involved in a decorating process before.

Another area I would like to develop this year is my photography skills.
I believe experimenting with light and composition as a key element of design.
Being able to capture my designs through photography is another great way to experiment with structure through collage and adobe experimentation.

I am really interested in Graphic Communications as a Top up course, I believe communicating with clients through presentations and design is key to selling a client a visualisation.
I really hope to pursue my work into this field and develop my skills on a rounded basis to ensure I have an understanding in Graphic and Spatial design.
