MTV Cafe

MTV Rationale :

MTV is a current music brand which has rocked television from the day they ‘killed the radio star’ with music video recordings.

The brief is to re-design MTV’s social space/cafe area in the London studios based in Camden Town - Hawley Crescent. The current social space is simple with minimal seating and little graphic design, I hope to make it more inviting and comfortable for visitors, functions and Meetings with potential clients.

I have researched the history of MTV and how it has developed from the 1970’s.
Not only is this company extremely successful, consumers have very high expectations for this ever growing music phenomenon, therefore I intend to exaggerate its greatness through my design in their social space.

My target audience is young music artists and the staff of MTV studios.
This design will reflect the trend of new artists as well as using nostalgic themes to enhance the ‘retro’ themes of Camden town.
Primary sources demonstrated to me that the studios are undergoing reconstruction of the exterior build.
After Looking at the plans of the new theme, and colour schemes I have decided to use elements within my design to relate the tone and stance of the MTV building.

Concept:
Theme-
MTV was the first American cable channel to produce music videos.
I intend to create a design which is reflective on music as a whole, from where it originated and where it is today modernised.
My aim is to captivate the audience and draw them into this space for coffees, meetings and general functions.
The theme of my design is nostalgic and current in order to welcome local artists and visitors as well as possibly well known music idols and MTV associates.
Structure-
The main feature of this space will be a structured aluminium recored arm- influenced by the Thorens 160 model, it will be self supportive and elevated 3 meters along the wall with the Bar and 3 anechoic chambers underneath for separate seating areas.

The anechoic chambers will be a cylinder shape in coherence with the circular tubes of the aluminium arm, I have decided to use this style of booth as they will be a great way to divert excess noise from the space so that meetings can be as private as possible without having to use doors and create different rooms.
These cylinders will be in the colours or Red,Orange and Yellow to compliment the new structure of MTV’s Studio construction “in progress”
by Morgan Sindall.
Anechoic chambers are used frequently in recording studios to captivate sound easily, not only does it have an interesting texture and feel, it is music related and if used in the right way will be aesthetically pleasing to the consumer.

Pecha Kucha -Targets 2012

This Pecha Kucha Project is focused on the main aims I hope to achieve this year.
In my second year of the FDA graphic and spatial communications course I intend to focus on creating 3d visuals using Vectorworks and other various software which will enable me to communicate my spatial designs more effectively. Over the summer I have spent some time looking at various images which are computer generated, and also communicate an artistic characteristic.

I Would love to develop a more hands on approach to my 3D designs, with the use of model making, I hope to experiment with different materials and work with scales and accurate measurments to produce models which will give me a more 'real' idea of how my intended space will look and what would need to be altered accordingly.
My work experience with Kate Malone enabled me to develop my logo and branding design skills which I would like to pursue further.

Working with ceramics has really opened up areas of model making I have never experimented with before, I really enjoyed working with glaze combinations to enhance my knowledge on the science behind the art.
The collaboration of chemicals and oxides needed to create such amazing colourful outcomes is really complex and needs to be tested regularly for research into new colours alongside durability and health and safety.
This demonstrated to me there are so many different ways to create colours and technologies other than just using the standardised RGB & CMYK.

I travelled to Melbourne-Australia in March 2012 and found my self inspired by the incredible city.
The structures are all so modernised and to such a large scale compared to London which still has its 'old town' characteristics.

Tiles Wine Bar and Restaurant based in Victoria was due to have a refurbishment, I was asked to help plan and decorate the new style of the restaurant in hope to attract more customers over the christmas period.
This project was based on deciding which colour to paint it and how the layout swell as the furniture could be altered to draw in more consumers.
This project was fun as I had never been involved in a decorating process before.

Another area I would like to develop this year is my photography skills.
I believe experimenting with light and composition as a key element of design.
Being able to capture my designs through photography is another great way to experiment with structure through collage and adobe experimentation.

I am really interested in Graphic Communications as a Top up course, I believe communicating with clients through presentations and design is key to selling a client a visualisation.
I really hope to pursue my work into this field and develop my skills on a rounded basis to ensure I have an understanding in Graphic and Spatial design.

About Kate Malone

Why I chose Kate Malone for Work Experience.
http://www.katemaloneceramics.com/

After researching into the art work of Kate Malone I realised there was a field of design which I haven't yet explored.
Working in the graphic design agency (tandi) last summer really opened me up to new opportunities and I was involved with design and the management of the small company.
The placement was challenging and interesting as I learned how a business works in all aspects, working with clients such as Brittany ferries and Pride in bournemouth, working on briefs and websites. I am so grateful to have had the chance to work with professionals, however I have decided to seek work experience in a more 3d environment this summer.
I believe getting more involved with hands on techniques and the physical making of ones own designs, is an area which will open up more variety in the future of my ideas.

On a personal level:
Kate Malone is an inspiration to me and has been from a young age, as she has shared
gallery space with my father Peter Chatterton (photographer)
Kate’s beautiful ceramic pots have always been a success and I have thrived to one day learn from her.
After reading her book ‘A book of pots’ it was clear to me I had to  contact Kate at a chance she may be looking for an enthusiastic designer to work with, I was in luck!
“My aim to broadcast a sense of optimism through  my work,  to touch the emotions..the pleasure buttons of the spirit, and chase an instinctive use of positive symbolism” - Kate Malone

How will ceramics link with my course?
I am a very positive character and work hard to achieve my ambitions, recently I have become more interested in discovering new ways to bring my ideas to life, and this new 3d approach will really engage me on the model making skills i wish to acquire.
Ceramics is a challenging prospect for me as I have only worked in 2d for the most of my education, with only a glimpse into using other media’s.
I intend to use this time efficiently in broadening my skills within design and the making it come to life.
With the combination of ceramics and glazing along side using the Adobe programs I hope to create some really beautiful pieces for my portfolio.

Working in a studio environment will again expand my knowledge on critique and team spirit.
I believe that by choosing such work experience as this I will gain an insight to a new angle of design in hope to inspire my creations next year.

After my interview with Kate and her associates we discussed how I can help her in the studio, she has given me a mixed ‘to do’ list which consists of:
-Creating a brand identity for her and her ceramics - Logo
-Combining textures and graphic branding to form-
-Business Cards
-Letter heads
-Receipts
And finally a Commission book - to hopefully broaden her client base.

I am thrilled that not only will I be learning from Kate Malone, I will be designing for her too.
I am extremely excited to be working with such a spectacular artist
on a months internship.

This is the Glaze studio, where all the oxidants and equipment is kept to create and test new colours for the pots.
This is a sieving technique used to create the paste to place onto the pot before it is fired in the kiln. The sieving has to be accurately measured with the right amount of water to make sure the consistency is right to paint onto the pots. This takes a lot of arm strength as the substance is extremely thick.

This is one of the tests used for new combination of glaze colours, the round sphere is so that we can see how the glaze appears on a round curved surface, and the tray is to catch any left over glaze as not to make a mess in the kiln.
The patterned 'eyes' which is what I call them are to look at the glaze on a small surface texture.
These are some clay tests I created.
Drip trays are used to catch any left over glaze as not to spoil the kiln.
The Kiln itself.

Kate Commissioned me to design her some stickers with her most popular designs, and also her logo.
This is the final outcome, as you can see I have used the design below and manipulated it into various pastel colours to ensure a variety amongst the design.
Producing the stickers and developing the designs on photoshop have developed my knowledge on Adobe software- we intend to develop these designs further to have more of a variation- possibly in coherence with future projects.

Logo Initial Ideas

These are some initial logo designs. The signature was scanned in and the images i edited in Illustrator before transferring them into photoshop, i had to ensure the quality was great enough to use the imagery at all sizes.
I have never used illustrator before so this was a challenge, i have found that all the Adobe programmes are similar and using a combination of them really helped me visualise my designs.
Kate has her own style with her sketches and plans for her pots,  finding a way to link her work with my graphic design style without losing touch of either style was crucial for the final outcomes.
The best way i find to overcome this problem is to brainstorm a mixture of my ideas and compositions and then we will have a meeting for an hour everyday to explore new concepts and development. once we had reached a educated design decision, Kate will then draw the idea out in her style for me to scan and edit into the logo and numerous other tasks i have been briefed to do.
These daily critiques are extremely helpful and i greatly value her expert opinion as this filed of design is completely new to me.

Letter Press Logo

The Letter press logo is something I would really like to do for Kate's business, as she is a 3D ceramist i think it would be really fitting to have an embossed logo which feels more professional sometimes than a flat 2d image.
This is the final signature we have come up with which we shall consistently use throughout the design development of each brief.
It is a hand written signature in a medium black fine liner in which i have developed on illustrator for the quality of pixels.
Every artist has there own mark, whether it be a picture, a sign or a name. This design element must always be clear and legible and flow with the artwork of the designer themselves- representation of character.
Kates designs are beautiful, mainly pens and paint to create a layered yet transparent feel with enough body to demonstrate the 3D aspect.
The logo I am creating has to reflect on these key points.

Business Card Design

This is one of my business card initial ideas using photoshop and a developed edited drawing of kate's combined to create a ceramic artistic feel.
I really like the colours and brush strokes, however we decided that we need a more contemporary style and more legible typography.
Designing these business cards enabled me to think about my own promotion of design and how I want to appeal when I meet a potential client.
This project has made me think about which direction I want to take my style of work and how I will succeed by selling my ideas in an appropriate manner.
The alignment and spacing of the typography has to compliment the image, it has to be clean sleek and professional as Kate is such a well known ceramist and commissioned such large important projects, for example the new glaze and tiling on the Saville Row build.

Scale

This image is to demonstrate the larger scale of some of the pots.

Pots

These are some secondary images of Kate's Pots raw and in glazed form.
I have used some of these images as visual business cards.
We decided that it would be a good idea to have images on the cards so that customers or potential clients would remember her work.

Business Card Development

The development of the business cards were extremely important as Kate has
a very particular style of work which we wanted to be perceived immediately
through the cards as its the product which she will potentially be remembered by. This development enabled me to keep going over my designs to make amendments which was a really important learning curve as the client must always be happy with the outcome.
I contacted a few printing companies however we decided to first use moo-cards to print the first 100 cards to test the designs to scale on the right depth and style of paper.

Final Email Footer

This is my final design for Kate's Logo and email footer.
She asked me to create something illustrative along with her hand written signature.
Kate has always signed her pots with her signature therefore it is important to be included in her identification graphics, for recognition purposes.
